Maasai Mara University, Narok closed after students clash over football match

Maasai Mara University main campus in Narok County has been closed indefinitely after students clashed leaving two of them critically injured.

The chaos that rocked the university over the weekend witnessed two groups of students fight during an English Premier League game causing the university's administration to close the institution due to security reasons.

The students through Maasai Mara University Students' Organization (MMUSO )President Daniel Tarayia who addressed the press at the institution blamed the chaos on 'outsiders' for the chaos called on the police to investigate the matter.

He said that the incident happened spontaneously where some people believed to be outsiders were spotted participating in the chaos where scores of students were injured but two of them were reportedly seriously injured and in different hospitals.

"The university have been closed indefinitely as most of the students are psychologically, mentally and even physically haunted after the incident. We are yet to know the time it will take to re-open but we will be having Senate meeting with the administration on way forward," said Tarayia.

Mr Tarayia has however called on the police to get into the bottom of the matter and arrest those behind claiming that outside forces could be involved.

Efforts to get a comment from the university's Vice Chancellor Prof Mary Walingo were futile as she was said to be holed in a closed-door crisis meeting with top management over the matter at her office.

The students were given 30 minutes by the security to leave the university's compound and most of them as The Standard found out were seen stranded waiting at various bus stages waiting to travel to their homes.

Area County Police Commander Abdi Galgalo said investigations into the issue has already been launched and that the culprits will be brought to book.
