Man commits suicide at mother-in-law's home

A 28-year-old man yesterday committed suicide in Alego, Siaya County following troubles on the home front.

The body of Moses Otieno was found dangling from a tree outside his mother-in-law's home.

According to a relative who sought anonymity, Mr Otieno and his wife have been having problems in their marriage for some time.

"This is not the first time his wife has come back home following their wrangles. It is sad that the man had to commit suicide at his in-laws' home. It is not traditionally right for such to happen," he said.

North Alego Chief Thomas Ojero said the couple had quarreled on Saturday, prompting the wife to leave for her paternal home in Nyamila sub-location.

The chief noted that the deceased, who is from the neighbouring Nyalgunga sub-location, followed her two days later with the aim of solving their issues and taking her back home.

Otieno's body was taken to Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary to await postmortem.

LUO CULTURE

"It is important to sort out marital problems in a way that doesn't end in death. A lot of couples have forgotten the importance of prayer in marriage," Mr Ojero said.

North Alego residents described the incident as a taboo in Luo culture, saying that Otieno had other intentions for taking his life at his in-laws' home.
