Students at Mai Mahiu Boys set ablaze their dormitory

Students of Mai Mahiu Boys Secondary School in Naivasha ran amok on Saturday night, torching their dormitory.

Property worth millions of shillings went up in flames as police moved in to investigate the incident.

This is the second time this year that the students have torched the institution. The school is located a few kilometres from Mai Mahiu trading centre.

More than 100 students were forced to spend the night in the cold as the management met to decide the way forward.

A witness, Joseph Njoroge, said the fire started at around 9pm from one of the dormitories and spread very fast to others due to the strong winds in the area.

He said efforts by the staff and the public to help put off the fire were unfruitful.

"This town has no fire fighting engine, and there was very little that we could do during the night incident," said Mr Njoroge.

Naivasha OCPD Titus Munyoki said the police had launched investigations to determine what prompted the students to set the dorm on fire.

"We are treating the matter as arson and investigations are undergoing, and we expect to make arrests very soon," he said.

Meanwhile, a hotel worker has had her arm amputated after she was attacked by thugs in one of the hotels in Naivasha on Sunday morning.

Doctors had to amputate the arm after the woman suffered severe injuries on her arm during the robbery at Triple Eden Hotel along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road.
