A 91-year-old inmate at Kakamega main prison has asked to be set free because he has “no energy to commit crime” and is no longer a danger to society.
Rasto Otuya was jailed for defiling a 10-year-old in 2012, according to prison records, and was sentenced to 10 years, but later appealed and got the lesser sentence of seven years.
He has so far served four years and laments that life in jail is hectic for him. “I am an old man and that young girl has made me spend all this years in prison. I need to go home. I am sharing the same facility with my grandchildren. This place is not for me,” he told The Nairobian last week during the African Correctional Day to celebrate humane treatment of prisoners.
Both male and female inmates were treated to special diet and listened to music. Women brought joy to male inmates through their songs, poems and suggestive dance styles that elicited wild cheers.
Kakamega main prison houses 1,188 inmates, which is way above its recommended capacity of 500 according to Superintendent Sylvia Ngeiywa.
