Learning in Mandera in progress despite TSC staff taking off

Kenya: The terror attack on a bus in Mandera in November 2014 left 28 teachers dead, creating panic in non-locals who later fled the area.

The situation afftected learning in the area as teachers from other regions opted out of the county fearing for their lives.

Governor Ali Roba said the county resorted to employing untrained teachers to salvage the situation and ensure pupils benefit from education like counterparts from the rest of the country.

“We suffered at the hands of Teachers Service Commission (TSC) staff when they deserted pupils because of security threats. But we have hired 830 untrained teachers and 460 Early Childhood Development (ECD) teachers all on Mandera County payroll,” said Roba in an interview.

The pictures below show pupils in class being taught by an untrained teacher. This happens as learning in most parts of the country remains paralysed owing to the teachers strike that is in its third week now.
