Top policewomen promoted as Kaindi row rages

Four senior women police officers have been  promoted and posted to lucrative posts in changes seen as part of efforts to mitigate the outcry caused by the removal of former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police Grace Kaindi.

Signs that a woman is unlikely to succeed Kaindi as per the law were evident after a senior officer was posted to General Service Unit to take over from Joel Kitili, who is the acting DIG.

Judy Jebet was appointed the commandant of CID Training School, Jacinta Kinyua traffic commandant, Miriam Muli is now director of inspection while Mary Kaol becomes the director of personnel at CID.

The changes were announced in the wake of the exit of Kaindi. Leaders have complained she was mistreated and the law was not followed in her replacement.

The law says the appointing authorities must ensure that at all times one of the three positions of the Inspector-General and the two Deputy Inspector-Generals is of opposite gender.

President Kenyatta had on Tuesday said Kitili's nomination will not take place until the substantive process of appointing the next DIG takes place.

In the new changes, deputy DIG Joseph Ashmala was moved to CID and named the new deputy director.

The new deputy to the DIG is director of reforms King'ori Mwangi while Stephen Chelimo was named the GSU commandant, replacing Kitili.

The changes announced by Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet saw former GSU commandant William Saiya named the commandant Kiganjo Police College to replace Peter Kavila, who is retiring and outgoing Nairobi police boss Benson Kibue appointed director of operations at Vigilance House to replace Philip Ndolo who will head KAPU.

Kiganjo deputy commandant Gabow Noor was named the head of transport at police headquarters as most of those replaced like deputy director of CID Gideon Kimilu were moved to the Ministry of Interior for redeployment.

Joseph Limo will lead the Criminal Records Office, Joseph ole Tito (Anti-stock Theft Unit), Mercus Ochola (Director Internal Affairs Unit), Leo Nyongesa (Community Policing), Stanley Lemai (Personnel) and Rogers Mbithi is Director Police Airwing.
