Kitale: Students spend night in cold after night fire

At least 100 students of Boma Boys High School in Kitale spent the night in the cold after their dormitory was gutted.

According to witnesses, the fire started at around 6:30pm, destroying property estimated to be worth more than Sh2 million.

No one was injured in the Wednesday evening incident whose cause is yet to be established.

Area chief Charles Namunyu said about half of the property was completely razed, adding that close to 150 students had just reported back for third term from the August holiday.

He said the dormitory dubbed Kifaru could accommodate 104 students and had 52 beds.

"We are yet to establish the cause of the fire although preliminary reports indicated it could be due to an electric fault," he said.

Mr Namunyu disclosed that officials from relevant departments including the Ministry of Education, Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the Kenya Power were still investigating the cause of the fire.

The administrator said the quick intervention by fire fighters from the county government enabled students to salvage part of their properties.
