CORD to launch voter registration

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) is planning to launch a massive voter registration exercise once it is satisfied with the number of new Identity Cards acquired.

Although the statistics from the National Registration Bureau indicate that Nyanza and Western regions are leading in the acquisition of IDs, CORD believes that not all eligible persons have acquired the document.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) indicated that only 81,923 Kenyans have registered as voters since April 2013.

Ford Kenya Secretary General Eseli Simiyu said CORD's main concern is that its supporters get IDs.

"Once we assess the success of this, we shall focus on voter registration," said the Tongaren MP.

"We have always been concerned that IEBC is not serious in registering voters in CORD's strongholds. We are aware that because there is no campaign in some perceived Jubilee strongholds, they are reluctant to register voters in CORD's strongholds," Head of CORD Secretariat Norman Magaya said.
