It all started with a poem and ended with breakfast at Deputy President William Ruto's official residence in Karen, Nairobi.

The improbable trip by a group of about 45 pupils and a few teachers to Ruto's residence was set in motion two weeks ago in at Murang'a.

The DP had gone to the area to grace a thanksgiving ceremony where Spasha Mereka, 13, a Standard Seven pupil at St Thomas Academy recited a poem titled "My Inspiration" chronicling the DP's fairy tale journey to becoming the country's second in command.

After a masterful delivery of the poem that delighted Ruto and other guests present to no end, the young man also used the occasion to request the DP to invite him for breakfast in Nairobi where together they could 'share a banana from Murang'a County.'

Yesterday, Mereka's dream came true and of course he remembered to bring along a bunch of bananas. And he got more than he had bargained for. Apart from the breakfast treat, he also got an opportunity to "feel" the DP's office.

During the breakfast meeting, the DP said every child in the country has an opportunity to excel and urged the students to work hard in their studies.

"Your dreams are valid; all you need to do is work hard by being consistent and listening to teachers. This country offers an opportunity to every child to excel," he said.

The school's head teacher, John Gichengo, who was part of the delegation thanked the DP for hosting them.
