Kenyan MPs summon AIrports managers

The National Assembly Transport Committee has now summoned the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) management as it starts investigating the controversial multi-million-shilling buses scam.

Committee chairman Maina Kamanda yesterday told The Standard the KAA's management is scheduled to appear before them tomorrow to shed light on the leasing of the five-ramp passenger buses at Sh10 million per month.

The five buses were leased by the authority to transport passengers from aircraft when planes are parked away from the arrival or departure terminals, in a deal that has elicited questions.

The move by the committee comes days after KAA board interdicted six senior officials, including acting Managing Director Lucy Mbugua, to pave way for investigations into the matter.

"This matter that has attracted even the attention of the President. As an oversight team, we want to establish if this was a scandal," said Mr Kamanda, who is also Starehe MP.

"After the KAA management, we will consider who else we will need to invite to appear for questioning. We owe it to Kenyans to inform them if the leasing of the buses was rightly done," he added.

Last week, KAA board chairman David Kimaiyo announced the interdiction of Mbugua, Finance General Manager John Thumbi, Legal Counsel Victor Arika, Procurement Manager Lilian Okidi, Airport Engineer Christopher Warutere and Head of Examination Martin Kungu to pave way for the investigations.
