Five dead and dozens injured after train derails in Philadelphia

USA:  At least five people have been killed and dozens injured after a train derailed close to a major US city.

The Amtrak train, which was carrying 243 passengers and crew members, left the tracks near Philadelphia causing 10 carriages to overturn.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic, with many terrified passengers climbing out of windows to get away from the wreckage.

Mayor Michael Nutter described the scene as "an absolute disastrous mess".

As reported by Sky News, he added: "I've never seen anything like this in my life. It is a devastating scene down there.

Emergency services said five people have been killed with six people critically injured. Dozens more were rushed to hospital.

The train was travelling from Washington to New York when it left the tracks.

Passengers said the train quickly slowed down before everything started to shake.

Daniel Wetrin said it was like something from a film.

He said: "There were people standing around, people with bloody faces."
