Sonko fights Kidero team's left-hand-drive module

Kenyan drivers may have to use the left-hand-drive module, as opposed to the current right-hand-drive module, if the recommendations of a committee tasked with coming up with ways to decongest the roads are implemented.

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko told a Nairobi Court the Task Force on the Decongestion of Traffic in Nairobi City chaired by John Mosonik, an engineer in the Transport ministry, contains 'left-hand-drive' illustrations of the proposed intersections of the specific roundabouts that are now subject to the proceedings.

He said the proposed changes would cost the taxpayer Sh400 million, which has been set aside for the project. Sonko told High Court Judge Weldon Korir the City County Government has not shown evidence that approximately Sh90 billion is lost annually due to traffic snarl-ups.

"Whereas I acknowledge the second respondent's (Transport Cabinet Secretary's) right to consult on such matters in Nairobi, I believe that such mandate ought not to be abused to cloak and gloss over wasteful actions that cost Nairobi motorists dearly in the process of implementing such a decision," he said. The matter will be heard on June 4.
