Two killed in Voi crash after lorries collide head on, culprit flees scene

Voi, Kenya - Two people died on the spot after a head-on collision between two lorries along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

According to the County Police Commander Richard Bitonga, the accident occurred at Ndii near Voi town on Saturday, in an area regarded as one of the major black spots in the country.

He said one of the lorry drivers was trying to overtake another vehicle causing the accident.

Mr Bitonga said a driver and his turn boy in one of the lorries died instantly. He said the driver in the other lorry escaped immediately after the accident and is being sought after.

“We are still looking for the runway suspect. Immediately we arrest him we will charge him for dangerous driving and causing deaths,” said the police officer.

The incident comes barely a week after four people, among them three family members, perished and scores of others were seriously injured in separate road accidents along the highway.

ANOTHER ACCIDENT

The accident involved a lorry and a Toyota Premio. It brings to six the number of people who had so far died as a result of road accidents in the recent past.

The three family members, among them a two-and half-year old girl and her father, died on the spot in Maungu Township.

Police said the injured victims who included two children and their mother, were rushed to Voi hospital.

The lorry driver and his turn boy escaped immediately after the incident.

overtaking

“The driver was overtaking another vehicle without calculating the distance of the incoming lorry. The two vehicles collided head-on,” said Mr Bitonga.

Speaking from the scene of the incident, the police officer said the bodies of the two were taken to the hospital mortuary and investigations launched.

Rozina Kisochi, a Member of County Assembly representing the disabled, has asked the Government to complete the rehabilitation work at the dilapidated Voi-Mwatate-Wundanyi road.

“The road is still incomplete after the contractor abandoned the construction site over non-payment. The bumps which were erected last year are invisible and the road is not marked making it difficult for motorists plying the road,” she said.

“We are blaming the numerous accidents on careless driving on the part of the drivers. Some of them even overtake without making sure that the road in front of them is clear,” added Bitonga.
