Kenya’s Parliament Agriculture team grilled over graft claims

NAIROBI: The chairman of the National Assembly committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Co-operatives Adan Noor was Monday grilled over corruption allegations facing his team.

Noor, who is also Mandera North MP, spent hours at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC)  answering questions regarding claims of corruption into operations at the Mumias Sugar Company.

His other colleagues in the committee were also expected for grilling.

Members of the Agriculture committee are alleged to have been bribed with Sh60 million by former managers of Mumias Sugar to expunge their names in a report on irregularities in the sugar sector.

EACC is questioning a number of MPs from the Public Accounts and Agriculture Committees of the National Assembly over graft claims.

PAC, whose members traded bribery accusations, prompting a parliamentary investigation, has since been dissolved on the recommendations of the Powers and Privileges Committee that also banned its former chairman Ababu Namwamba and five lawmakers from re-appointment to the watchdog committee.

The EACC report named 26 MPs in the committee for allegedly receiving Sh1.5 million from former Interior Permanent Secretary Mutea Iringo, now suspended, to expunge his name form the committee's report on unexplained expenditure at the Office of the President.

Today, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho is expected at the commission to answer questions of alleged corruption.

It is claimed he facilitated the grabbing of Mwembe Tayari market by two prominent Mombasa businessmen. He has denied the claims.

ODM officials were Monday mobilising its Nairobi supporters to give Joho a "heroic" reception ahead of his date with EACC.

ODM Nairobi officials, led by former mayor George Aladwa, are mobilising supporters to turn out in large numbers.

"We are standing in solidarity with our leaders because we believe some of the accusations, like in Joho's case, are mere witch-hunting," Aladwa said.

A multi-agency taskforce comprising persons from Director of Public Prosecutions, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations as well as EACC are handling the cases.

A number of leaders have so far been interrogated following President uhuru Kenyatta's 60-day deadline for the conclusion of the investigations.
