Co-operatives key to EAC development, says Kibaki

Nairobi, Kenya:  Former President Mwai Kibaki has appreciated the role played by the co-operative movement in the economy and integration of East African countries.

"Over the years, co-operatives have played a crucial role in mobilising savings and facilitating credit, beside providing opportunities for self-employment as well as wealth creation for thousands of people," he said. The former Head of State made the remarks at his Nyari office in Nairobi as he received Silas Kobia, a respected voice in the co-operative sector, yesterday.

During the meeting, Mr Kobia presented the former President with two books he has written - The Co-operative Movement in Kenya: Challenges and Opportunities, published in 2011, and Co-operatives in East Africa, published this year.
