Why police could charge ‘kidnapped’ MCA

Police are considering pressing charges against Samuel Gitau, the Juja MCA who was reportedly kidnapped. Detectives in Ruiru are apparently not satisfied with explanations about the kidnap. The MCA went missing on March 7, before escaping from his alleged captors after eight days. Police have not disclosed the nature of charges facing the politician, but we have been made to understand they might prefer two charges against the politician.

Gitau has not publicly spoken about the matter since he dramatically jumped off the boot of a moving vehicle on March 15 in Naivasha.

He was transferred to The Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi by a team led by Kiambu Governor William Kabogo, but declined to record a statement with the police who had wanted to question him over the matter.

Gitau is said to have left his Mirima-ini estate home at about 8.30pm on the fateful night to withdraw money from an ATM in Juja town but did not return home. His vehicle, a Toyota Voxy, was found the following morning at the entrance of the compound.

Police suspect the incident is linked to local politics and believe that Gitau has been economical with information, which mightbe crucial in cracking the case. For instance, they argue, after interviewing the MCA’s close relatives, they established that Gitau never walked without a phone. “Even when his phone has no power, he normally borrows one from a relative. It is therefore important that we understand why he left his phone at home that day,” said a detective privy to the investigations.
