Gunmen attack Nyatike MP Edick Anyanga, ask him to

Nyatike MP Edick Omondi Anyanga in hospital

NAIROBI: Nyatike MP Edick Omondi Anyanga is admitted in hospital after he was attacked and seriously injured on Saturday night at his Karen home in Nairobi.

Police and witnesses say the MP was attacked by four armed men who were wearing balaclavas as he drove into his home. He was robbed of his Sh200,000, mobile phones and other valuables.

The attackers were apparently in his compound at the time of the attack. Contrary to initial reports, the MP was not shot. Instead, he sustained injuries after he was hit on the head and face.

They however shot and shattered his car's window in the scuffle. Anyanga told his colleagues who visited him at the Aga Khan hospital in Nairobi he had driven into the compound with the driver at about 8pm when the gunmen confronted him.

The four men proceeded to the house and a scuffle ensued. According to him as the thugs gained entry to the house he resisted and he was hit on the head, shoulder and hand with a gun.

And as they left the house the MP's son and an employee tried to block them prompting the shooting.

Police say they are yet to know the motive of the attack even though the MP says the attackers had told him to "go slow".

Suna MP Junet Mohamed and a host of MPs visited him in hospital.

"He is in a stable condition but it seems he had bled much before he arrived in hospital so the doctors have advised him to rest," said Junet.

Anyanga was recently in the news over allegations of corruption bedevilling the Public Accounts Committee where he is a member.

There are claims that some of the members of the committee were bribed to alter reports. The news of the attack sent panic among many Kenyans.

According to Nairobi Police boss Benson Kibue, the MP also  shot at the gunmen as they fled.
"They did not know he was armed and they had also tried to break into a safe that was in the house but were unable forcing them to run out. We suspect they were thugs who had information on what they wanted," said Kibue.
He said the MP was hit by a gun butt in the scuffle.
