Community-sponsored boy scores A in KCSE

Meshack Kipchirchir Sum beat all the odds and scored an impressive A (Plain) in 2014 KCSE exams.

Eldoret, Kenya: Meshack Kipchirchir Sum has made his community proud by scoring an impressive A (plain) of 84 points in last year's KCSE examination.

Kipchirchir, who is a beneficiary of community contributions for his entire secondary schooling, led the onslaught by emerging the top student at his former Samoei Boys School in Nandi County.

The 18-year-old from Seiyo village overcame all the challenges to make his kinsmen proud of their contribution towards his schooling.

His mother, Esther Sum, pegged the performance to the monetary assistance she has been receiving from locals.

"My son has made me proud and I thank the community for constantly contributing towards his fee from Form One till he cleared," she said.

The single mother who has been working as a waitress in a local hotel noted that she had high hopes from his second-born son due to his sterling performance since he started school.

CHALLENGING MOMENTS

"There were tough times when he would be sent home due to fees and he would stay for more than three weeks. I am glad that his determination and hard work never let the locals who had faith in him down," she added.

The elated boy attributed the success to perseverance and constant support he received from locals and teachers at his school.

"My dream is to become a neurosurgeon so that I can also be of help to others in society as well as my mother who has been supportive," he added.

Stephen Sorobit, a local said the boy's performance had brought hope to the society.

Samoei Deputy Principal Stanley Baraiywo praised the boy saying his sterling performance had lifted the school's mean score.

"Despite being a needy student, there were times he would miss school but nevertheless, his results have shone throughout the region and we are proud of him," he said.
