NAIROBI, KENYA: Nairobi City County Governor Dr Evans Kidero has said plans are underway to sign a deal with the Japanese government that will see Nairobi City adopt the Yurikamome Mass Transit Automated Guideway Train system.
“The train system is fully automated and transports about 170k passengers everyday and runs for 16 hours each day. I am happy to announce that my government and Japan International Corporation (JICA) are at a very advanced stage of negotiations to commence construction of the Mass Transit System in Nairobi County through the Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Authority (NAMETA),” Says the Governor.
It is expected that the feasibility study for this project will be ready later this year and construction is expected to commence in February 2016. This will go a long way in easing traffic in Nairobi.
In matters housing, the governor will mid this year lead the ground breaking ceremony of a project in Eastlands similar to the Otemachi-Marunouchi-Yurakucho urban housing development area which the governor visited in Japan.
Said Dr Kidero “It is my responsibility as Nairobi governor to ensure I improve the living conditions of Nairobians’ in the informal settlements areas. The Mitsubishi Estate has re-developed old housing estate sitting on 120 Ha of land into a new City through the enhancement of infrastructure and urban functions.”
Known as the "New York City" the development comprises of low cost housing units, banks, hospitals, schools, office blocks, railway stations and recreational areas. This is similar to Nairobi County’s Urban Regeneration of Eastlands.
The governor is currently in talks with treasury to release money for project to be implemented on a PPP basis as the designs and feasibility studies of the project for the construction of 150,000 low cost housing units with all amenities is ready for implementation.
Concludes Kidero “Dependant on how soon treasury releases funds, ground breaking for this milestone event should take place mid this year.”
