Man sues Health Cabinet Secretary over Ebola public awareness

Kenya: A 72-year-old man residing in Dagoretti, Nairobi County has taken the Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia to court citing lack of sufficient information in the country on the Ebola virus.

Mathew Okwanda says there is insufficient information on the methods of prevention, treatment and care of a patient with the Ebola virus. This, he asserts is a violation of his right to access of information as enshrined in the constitution.

Okwanda further decried lack of sufficient health workers tasked with prevention, treatment and care of patients if an Ebola outbreak were to occur.

"The lack of information concerning prevention and treatment of patients with the Ebola virus is a threat to the petitioner's rights to the highest attainable standards of health as provided for by the constitution," he said in a sworn affidavit.

The matter which appeared before High Court Judge Weldon Korir was scheduled for mention on February 24.
