Fresh details of Anglo Leasing unearthed

Fresh information received by a technical team assessing the Anglo Leasing files has led to a delay in handing them over to Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko for further action.

The team was supposed to forward the files to Mr Tobiko's office on January 29. It reportedly stumbled on fresh details touching on two suspects behind the scandal that saw the Government lose billions of shillings over unscrupulous deals.

Sources told The Standard the team had received "some of the missing" information on two of the accused people, which they were analysing.

The nature of the information was not immediately clear as the source declined to give specifics.

The information was apparently supplied by one of the foreign agencies where the deals were cut. It is not clear if the information will help in the prosecution.

"They received information that is deemed important and can help in the prosecution of the case. We have not known the nature and seriousness of the information," said a source who asked not to be named.

Officials said the team can now submit the files this week.

"They said there was new information that they needed to include before submitting the files to this office. We expect them any time in the week," said Tobiko.

This will give the DPP a clear way if he needs to proceed with the proposed prosecution of the more than 10 people named in the scandal.

The team was compiling their report in a city hotel ahead of the handover.

Crucial witnesses

A source aware of the team's operations said they had virtually bridged the gaps and hoped the report would be accepted for prosecution.

December 4, 2014, Tobiko gave the team 30 more days to finish its work.

He said the team's request was necessitated by the nature, magnitude, scale and complexity of the outstanding assignment, new leads to be pursued and outstanding requests for mutual assistance.

The DPP added the request was necessitated by the number of crucial witnesses who were yet to record statements, and potential suspects to be interrogated and statement recorded.
