CS Najib Balala forms team to probe mining in Kilifi, Taita Taveta

MOMBASA: Mining Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala has appointed a taskforce to investigate challenges affecting mining activities in Kilifi and Taita-Taveta counties.

Mr Balala said exploration and mining activities in the coastal region have stalled due to persistent complaints.

"Despite effort by the ministry to address the complaints from locals, leaders, mineral rights holders and other stakeholders, they persisted," said Balala in a letter seen by The Standard.

The taskforce is expected to investigate the issue and recommend appropriate intervention "in order to have orderly and harmonious operations".

The letter dated January 23 and signed by Mining Principal Secretary Patrick Omutia was copied to National Land Commission Chairman Muhammad Swazuri, Lands Principal Secretary Mariamu El Maawy and Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu. Mr Mruttu confirmed that he had received the letter.

"I have received a letter from the Mining Cabinet Secretary and I will nominate a suitable representative to be appointed to the task force," he said.

Mruttu said the letter concerns the controversy surrounding the Wanjala mining area which is rich in Iron ore.
