Lorry runs over, kills sleeping woman

Embu, Kenya: A woman was on Wednesday night run over by a vehicle as she slept beside a road near Kamuketha Hotel.

Witnesses said the woman was sleeping under a lorry when the driver started the vehicle and drove off, crushing her head in the process before speeding away.

The deceased, known as Zainabu Ali, 52, was a mother of two from Majimbo estate.

She was a common figure in the town centre where she spent her days walking around and then falling asleep on shop verandahs or under parked vehicles.

Embu West Deputy OCPD Terry Muchemi said police were investigating to determine what actually happened.

"Our officers are on the lookout for the vehicle that ran over her and we are asking the public to volunteer whatever information they may have that will lead to the driver's arrest," Muchemi said.

The body was moved to the Embu Level Five Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem before burial.
