ODM MPs revive calls for dialogue on national security

Five Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) MPs from Nyanza region have revived calls for dialogue between the Government and the Opposition to discuss the new Security Law and how to tackle insecurity.

The leaders, Nicholas Gumbo (Rarieda), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), David Ochieng (Ugenya), Christine Ombaka (Siaya Women Representative) and Oburu Oginga (nominated) said the country needs a unified front towards tackling insecurity.

Last week, President Uhuru Kenyatta accented to controversial Security Amendment Law which the government says is meant to fill the gaps in the current law that impedes the effort to fix insecurity.

The Opposition, however, argue that introduction of the law would be tantamount to suspending the country's Bill of Rights.

Speaking on Friday in Rarieda Siaya County, the leaders said this year has been a challenging time for the country owing to several attacks and called on Uhuru to initiate dialogue with Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) ahead of next year.

Ochanda alleged that Parliament has outlived its objective mandate as a House where Laws are being made as some parliamentarians have used tyranny of numbers to push for their agendas at the expense of the people.

''The Laws cannot be passed that favour certain sections of ethnic communities. Why is the new Security law only celebrated by some people? We need a unified Law for the country,'' he said.

Ms Ombaka said new Laws are good for the country but there is need for unity among leaders to fight insecurity.
