Concern over increase in street children

There is growing concern over the increasing number of street children in Maralal town, a local philanthropist says.

Samburu Children Rehabilitation Centre Director Lucy Wilma attributed the increase to high HIV infection rates in the area.

Speaking while presenting gifts to children at the centre, Ms Wilma also blamed escalating poverty, insecurity and hunger in the region for the high numbers.

"Some 102 children are currently undergoing rehabilitation at the centre," she said.

More than 40 others have left the centre after rehabilitation and, according to Wilma, are pursuing education in different institutions.

She called on the State to improve security and put in place strategies to reduce high dependency on food aid during dry seasons.

"Well-wishers should also join hands with us in helping these children to ensure their right to life is upheld and provide them with a conducive environment to learn rather than neglecting them," she said.
