Drop case against hiring teachers, Teachers Service Commission told

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been asked to withdraw the case it filed in court barring counties from hiring Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers.

Narok Deputy Governor Evelyn Aruasa said by going to court, TSC continues to make the lives of ECDE teachers hard as they cannot be employed.

Speaking in her office yesterday, Ms Aruasa said counties had begun hiring ECDE teachers who for a long time had been ignored by the TSC.

"The County Government of Narok had planned to employ 600 ECDE teachers last January. Other counties had already hired but were forced to shelve the idea because of the court case. This continues to make life for the group of teachers unbearable," said the deputy governor.

Good foundation

Aruasa said children of the poor continue to miss on good foundation because of the standoff between the TSC and the counties.

TSC went to court to stop counties from hiring ECDE teachers saying the Constitution mandated the commission as the sole employer of teachers.

However, Aruasa said the Treasury has not allocated the commission enough funds to hire enough primary and secondary school teachers and should leave the hiring of ECDE teachers to counties since they have already set aside funds for the exercise.

She stated that the infrastructural developments being done for ECDE centres may not be beneficial if counties will not be allowed to hire teachers to help pre-school learners.
