Nairobi: Ghanaian President John Mahama Saturday toured the National Youth Service headquarters at Ruaraka, Nairobi.

President Mahama – who is on a State visit in the country – was conducted on the tour by his host President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The visiting Head of State was impressed by the NYS clean-up of Kibera slums in a video played at Friday’s Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium.

At Ruaraka, Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru briefed the Ghanaian President on the five-point vision of the reformed NYS.

The Cabinet Secretary said NYS will be the main actor in youth empowerment as a key driver to development.

She said 21,870 young people will be recruited to the NYS and in turn mentor 227,670 others annually. They will be organised in groups of 15.

Ms Waiguru said NYS service men and women will be expected to transfer knowledge and skills to the community they will be working in.

She pointed out that NYS will also be engaged in traffic control, a role they will perform from February next year in Nairobi city.

Mahama and Uhuru were scheduled to later hold bilateral talks at State House, Nairobi.
