NCIC Chairman Francis ole Kaparo warns leaders over incitement

National Cohesion and Integration Commission Chairman (NCIC) Francis ole Kaparo has warned politicians against making statements that might divide Kenyans along religious or tribal lines.

Speaking yesterday during a press briefing at the commission's offices, the former National Assembly Speaker said politicians have an obligation to promote unity.

Remembering the September 11, 2001 United States terrorism attack, Kaparo said American leaders were united in grief.

"Democrats and Republicans came together and spoke as American leaders and not politicians from the two political parties," said Kaparo.

He said the commission will take action on social media users who will post inciting messages.

Cause fear

"I want to also warn people who use social media especially Twitter and Facebook to spread hate speech. We are on the lookout for you. Such incitements can cause bloodshed in the country," he said.

Kaparo also asked workers' unions not to recall members who are working in Mandera County, saying such actions will make the terrorists feel that they have caused fear in the country. On Sunday, the Kenya National Teachers Union recalled all teachers working in Mandera, and on Monday, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union followed suit.
