European Union, Danida invest Sh3b in Kenya

The European Union (EU) and the Royal Danish embassy are currently funding 270 community projects to the tune of Sh3 billion.

The Head of Social affairs and Environment at the EU delegation in Kenya Horjodis Ogendo said the funds are being channeled through the Community Development Trust Programme (CDTF), focusing on community-based initiatives in rural and peri-urban areas.

The senior EU official was addressing the media on the sidelines of a one-day mid-term review evaluation of CDTF programmes at a Nairobi hotel. CDTF is a semi autonomous government agency within the ministry of Devolution and Planning, and has implemented more than 1,000 community-based projects countrywide. “The EU policy is to work with the Government to support policies geared to poverty reduction and uplift the living standards of Kenyans,” she noted.

EU Environment Programme Manager Thomas Yatich said they will work with county governments and other State agencies to achieve Vision 2030 economic objectives. Projects under CDTF funding include environment, agriculture, roads, health, education and water.

Planning Principal Secretary Peter Mangiti said CDTF has improved livelihood systems and conservation of community natural resources for environmental stability through prudent use of resources.
