CS Lenku: State to spend Sh20 billion in improving police service

NAIROBI, KENYA: The government will in the next five years is investing a staggering Sh20 billion in police modernisation programme to be realised in the next five years.

The programme include introduction of an insurance cover for all police officers, construction of houses and purchase of vehicles and improving police's remuneration, interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku has said.

Police tools including communication gadgets will also be improved in the exercise.

He said they expect the measures will yield immediate results while laying the foundation for a robust security system for a new Kenya.

"Security is a critical component towards sustaining the projected economic rate beyond six percent that is essential for achieving Vision 2030," he said.

Lenku admitted the country is facing unprecedented threats to peace and security.

"Kenya has in the recent months faced unprecedented threats to peace and security. Some of these challenges such as terrorism, banned drugs, illicit arms and human trafficking are external in nature created by political and social instability in neighbouring countries," Lenku observed.

Lenku made the remarks in presence of Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo at the Embakasi Administration Police Training College.
