Knut: We won't endorse school fees report

Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) officials have said they will not sign the school fees task force report today unless issues touching on teachers' affairs are excluded.

Knut Secretary General Wilson Sossion and national Chairman Mudzo Nzili yesterday said only the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is mandated to address 'modalities of employment of teachers' and cautioned the task force against going beyond their mandate.

"I will not append my signature to that report unless all matters touching on teachers' terms and conditions of service are expunged from it," said Sossion.

The 21-member committee meets this morning at the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa to incorporate submissions raised during Monday's stakeholders' meeting that brought together parents, civil society organisations, State agencies, and teachers' unions among others.

Former Education Assistant Minister Kilemi Mwiria, also task force chairman, said the report would be finalised by the end of the month, with recommendations made during the players' forum.

Knut claimed the team had sneaked back into the report issues already discussed.
