For a long time, the public and the Government have put the police force under performance pressure due to the rising insecurity in the country. I agree that police have a vital role in security matters but their efforts can be rendered fruitless due to lack of proper support in their operations.
In this case, support comes from both the Government and the public. It ranges from financial resources and co-operation from wananchi. It is clear that there is not much trust between the public and the police. It is crucial that cordial relations between these two groups be established. It is also important to note that most of the insecurity arises from the high level of unemployment.
It is evident that most terror gangs and thugs are made up of young people.
Now that the new Government has promised to create jobs to keep the youth occupied, the level of insecurity should go down. Lastly, police need to be appreciated enough so that they can be motivated to do their work. Theirs is not a job for the faint-hearted.
Police are known to be the most miserable public servants in Kenya, as a result of poor housing, low income and lack of adequate working materials.
Improving on this will ensure they are comfortable and will in turn perform their jobs with zest.
