The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) has re-introduced provincial boundaries for next year’s games.

This follows a directive from the Ministry of Education that KSSSA should realign with the original regions established by the ministry.

This means teams will drop the regional boundaries in next year’s games and adopt the historical provincial alignments that were in existence before the promulgation of the Constitution in 2010.

The new Constitution replaced provinces and created regions as administrative units. Following suit, KSSSA made similar changes and created regional championships, which also replaced the provincial games.

Following the new directive, Coast Region, formerly Mombasa Province, will retain the current name.

Lake will revert to Nyanza, Highlands Region will be known as Eastern, while Northern, comprising Garissa, Wajir and Mandera, will adopt the former name, North Eastern.

Metropolitan Region, which brought together Nairobi, Machakos, Makueni and Kajiado counties, has been scrapped. Nairobi remains a region while Makueni and Machakos counties will make up Eastern Region.

Kajiado, which is home to giants Laiser Hill, will revert to Rift Valley Province.

Nzoia Region will be known as Western, but will let go of West Pokot and Trans Nzoia, who move back to Rift Valley Region (former Mau).

Aberdare Region becomes Central Region.
