Board overrules Mruttu on school relocation

The county's Education Board has overturned the governor's proposal to relocate Voi Girls High School to Ore Forest land in the outskirts of Voi town to pave way for the implementation of the multi-billion shilling standard gauge railway project.

In overruling Governor John Mruttu's proposal on Monday, the board said the forest land is of great cultural significance for the Taitas as it is one of the community's worshipping sites.

Addressing the Press in Voi town after a closed-door meeting, the board's Chairman Marangi Mbogho said the school management committee and other education stakeholders had resolved that the institution be instead relocated to Vindo Multipurpose Co-operative Society Ltd land.

Dr Mbogho said Vindo offered the best alternative among the other pieces of land parcels available in the region.

He said the board was acting on the best interest of the children who were the main actors in learning sector.

Mr Mruttu recently disclosed that his administration had acquired a five-acre plot for the construction of the school, situated at Tanzania/Bondeni Settlement Scheme in the outskirts of Voi town.
