Coalition for Reforms and Democracy threatens to join teachers’ protests

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) has called on the Government to respect the rule of law and increase the teachers' pay.

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Chairman John Mbadi said failure by the Government to obey the Supreme Court ruling would bring about chaos in schools.

He added that the coalition would be joining in the teachers' protests if the ruling is not honoured.

"The children of Kenya must not spend one more week out of school. In the meantime, we stand in solidarity with teachers and the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu) and we declare our intention to join in the protest marches in support of the teachers," said Mr Mbadi.

Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that teachers be paid be paid a 50 to 60 per cent salary increase.

The Teachers Service Commission has since said it is not in a position to raise the amount required to make the payments.

Yesterday, Mbadi proposed a raft of measures to raise teachers' pay, including using money allocated to ministries but is not being used.

"The Auditor General in his last report disclosed that a number of ministries are not spending most of the monies allocated to them. The money should be recalled and pumped into paying teachers," he said.

Other sources CORD identified include interests collected for security money in savings accounts and billions of money unaccounted for in the National Intelligence Service.
