Gor Semelang'o wants name on Mathare vote papers

NAIROBI, KENYA: The High Court will on Thursday hear a petition filed by former Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) board chairman, who is seeking to have his name included in ballot papers for the Mathare by-election.

Gor Semelang'o wants the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) compelled to include his name on the list of candidates contesting in the by-election.

Semelang'o, who filed his appeal last week, had earlier sought to have the mini poll slated for August 7 postponed, but amended it to have his name included in the vote papers.

However, IEBC lawyer Edwin Mukele said the matter should be thrown out as Semelang'o made changes on the petition without following proper channels.

He further noted the politician should sort pending issues over his employment at YEDF. He told the court activist Okiya Omtata sued Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru for removing Semelang'o from his post as the youth fund board chairman.

But Semelang'o argued the amendment was not the substance of the petition and should not be the basis of its dismissal. He told the court that the electoral body declined to issue him with a nomination certificate.
