Mombasa; Kenya: Three people died in separate road accidents along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Taita-Taveta County over the weekend.

Two of the accident victims died on the spot after they were knocked down by hit-and-run vehicles while crossing the highway at Manyani and Kasarani areas at night.

The other victim died after he lost control of the vehicle he was driving and rolled several times near Maungu town.

County Commander Richard Bitonga said the victim died while being rushed to the Voi District Hospital.

RECKLESSNESS BLAMED

The incident brings to eight the number of those who have died and scores of others seriously injured as a result of accidents in separate incidents in the recent past along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Bitonga blamed reckless driving, drug and alcohol abuse by drivers as the main causes of these accidents.

“This is a warning to those drivers who do not mind the welfare of others, you will be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
