We have enough seeds, declares KSC

The country is not faced with a shortage of maize seeds, the Kenya Seed Company has said. This comes after Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba warned of fake seeds in circulation.

KSC’s head of corporate affairs Sammy Chepsiror dispelled rumours that farmers in Trans Nzoia are unable to access certified seeds, saying there is enough stock to cater for local demand.

“We have sufficient stock of maize seeds over and above the annual requirement. There is no cause for alarm. Farmers can buy certified seeds from registered agents,” said Chepsiror.

Khaemba, while launching the use of Mavuno fertilisers at Kiungani market, warned that unscrupulous people are selling uncertified seeds to make a quick buck.

The governor advised farmers to ensure they secure certified seeds from registered stock lists and shun people selling seeds in unpacked materials.

“My government is committed to boost food production but farmers should be careful when purchasing seeds because some people are out to make quick money this planting season,” he said.

He encouraged farmers to apply non-acidic fertilisers noting that soil in the county has high acidity level due to overuse of Double Ammonium Phosphate DAP.
