Eldoret Golf Club golfers Esther Chumo and John Barorot starred in Jamii Telkom Masters tournament at Karen.

The handicap 12 Chumo was the best golfer on the day after she returned 42 points on the  course that has been toughened for the Kenya Open Championship scheduled for March 6-9.

Chumo displayed great form, firing six pars through the opening nine holes. Speaking during  prize giving ceremony, Chumo said her powerful drive was the key to her success.

“The Karen course has now been set for the Kenya Open and driving straight and long was a definite advantage today. I dropped shots on the long par 4 fourth hole where I hit it right off the tee into the acacia trees and again at the par-4 eighth hole where I missed the fairway,” she said.

“The par-3 seventh hole also cost me a shot and I totally messed up the 10th,” she added. After that false start to her back nine, the champion quickly made amends, making birdies on the par-3 14th and par-5 15th holes.

Barorot, who is Eldoret Golf Club captain claimed the men’s winner prize with a score of 40 points.

He made four birdies through his round during the tournament that laid the ground for Kenya Open.

Barorot said: “Jamii Telkom have done a great job in supporting professional and amateur golf in Kenya, the 200 plus golfers who played at Karen is testament to that.”

I hope I will be fit next year to defend my title and if possible win the overall prize.”

Jamii Telkom General Manager John Kamau said the firm has been supporting the Masters tournament since 2010.

Susan Kasinga finished as the Lady winner with 41 points, Wanjira Kireri was Lady runner-up with 36 points and Maureen Muthua was second runner-up with 35 points.

The nines honors went to Annie Mutethia who collected 19 points and Ben Handa on  21 points.

The longest drive for ladies was claimed by  Chumo whilst the Karen Country Club captain, Anthony Gacheru, was the best amongst men golfers  with a massive 341-yard long drive down the ninth fairway.

Ben Wandawands claimed the nearest to the pin prize  on the par-3 14th and Zachariah Koech was the staff winner with 32 points beating Jamii Telkom chairman Joshua Chepkowny on count-back.

Meanwhile, James Akhonya, playing off handicap 22, emerged the overall winner of the Raptor Motors Golf tournament after posting 37 stable ford points at Kakamega Golf Club.
