The national rugby team are looking forward to a podium finish in one of the next IRB series tournaments, head coach, Paul Treu has said.

Treu, who was addressing diners at the send-off party hosted by sponsors Kenya Airways for the national team on Friday at Ole Sereni, said the best way of reciprocating sponsors’ support is by exceptional performance on the field.

“It (the good result) may not come in Dubai or PE (Port Elizabeth), but it will come and that will be our way of giving back to the sponsors,” said Treu.

“We are embarking on something whose end result we cannot tell right now, but with the technical team and players at our disposal, we are confident of pulling it off,” said Treu as the audience applauded.

Kenya Airways Sponsorships and Promotions Manager, Georgina Ndawa, pledged the company’s support for the national team and wished the team the very best in Dubai and Port Elizabeth. The team leave today for Dubai and will fly directly to South Africa.

Team captain Andrew Amonde said the onus to perform is on the team. “We have the best technical bench and dedicated players. We will do whatever it takes to reciprocate the support by the sponsors and the Board,” he said.

Other speakers at the function were the Director of National Squads, Kadieda Ogutu, who reiterated that nothing good comes cheaply, justifying the packed technical bench and the resultant cost and Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chairman, Mwangi Muthee.

Muthee said if Kenyans expect world-class performance, then they have to invest in world-class technical bench, which KRU has done.

He urged players to play knowing that they are inspiring the rest of Africa and other emerging nations.

He said any bonus will only be for players alone and not shared with the technical bench.

He brought President Kenyatta’s best wishes to the team.

Players present were Andrew Amonde (captain), rookies Leonard Mugaisi and Humphrey Mulama, Collins Injera, Felix Ayange, Horace Otieno, Philip Wamae and Michael Wanjala. Biko Adema, Oscar Ayodi and Eden Agera did not attend.
