Police imposter Joshua Waiganjo jailed to two years for handling police uniform

Naivasha, Kenya: Police imposter Joshua Karianjahi Waiganjo has been sentenced to two years in jail by a Naivasha court. Waiganjo was left tongue-tied after he was found guilty of being in possession of police uniform.

The incident comes a week after he released the first chapter of his book “Goodbye police comrades” in which he incriminated a senior politician on the ICC issue.

Naivasha Resident Magistrate Selina Muchungi found Waiganjo guilty of being in possession of various police uniforms against the law.

Waiganjo had been charged that on October 31 2004 in Kabati estate in Naivasha, he was found in possession of police gear.

Among the police gear found in his house were a pair of black boots, two pairs of police shirts and trousers, one jungle uniform and two pairs of shoulder flags marked Kenya police.

According to the prosecution, police acting on a tip-off from members of the public raided the house where they found the police uniform.

The prosecution told the court that the accused could not account how he got the police uniforms belonging to senior officers.

The prosecutor also told the court that the accused had previous convictions and called for stringent action against him.

In his defense, Waiganjo said that he was a police reservist and acquired the uniform through the then Rift Valley PPO Peter Kimanthi.

He said that he was appointed as a police reservist in 2003 and was later promoted to an assistant commissioner of police in 2005 adding that he had the appointment letter.

In her ruling, the magistrate said that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.

She said the accused could not clearly explain how he came into possession of the uniform belonging to senior officers.

 The accused was given the 14 days right of appeal.
