Groups want August 27 gazetted as Katiba Day

KENYA: Civil society groups have demanded that August 27 be gazetted as a Katiba Day holiday to commemorate the ushering in of the new Constitution.

The lobby groups held a procession from Freedom Corner at Uhuru Park in Nairobi to Tom Mboya’s monument along Moi Avenue to celebrate the third anniversary since the promulgation of the new Constitution.

Ms Florence Nyabwa, a member of the Civil Society Congress, said the gathering was not only to take stock of the gains made but also as a manifestation of public rage at attempts by a section of politicians to hijack the Constitution implementation process.

She raised concern over the quality of laws being enacted saying that most of them contravene the Constitution.

Meanwhile, a civil rights group says Kenyans are yet to enjoy the fruits of a new Constitution, and in particular police reforms, three years after the promulgation of the supreme law.

The Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) said the evils that have bedevilled the police force for years continue unabated. “Three years later, the dream of an accountable police service remains a dream. Three years later extra-judicial executions are becoming the order of the day,” said the organisation. IMLU said the public perception about the police was still largely negative.

The lobby said since the beginning of this year, it had documented 121 cases of extra-judicial executions by the police.
