Kisumu, Kenya: Over Sh6.5 million on transit from Kenya Commercial Bank in Busia to Kisumu has gone missing.

Administration Police officers and those from G4S Company abandoned the vehicle in Rangala area in Siaya County after collecting the cash from the border town.

Ugenya Deputy OCPD Josephat Ndung’u said the early afternoon incident started at Ugunja town when the chase car developed a mechanical problem and instead of the one being escorted to wait, the driver sped off.

“Armed robbers must have taken advantage when they realized that the administration police escorting the money were not on sight and immediately accosted the driver and the officer,” he said.

Mr Ndung’u said that the robbers who were using a Probox vehicle took three cash boxes leaving one in the G4S vehicle for lack of space in their car.

The total amount of money the robbers left behind was Sh1.6 million that was taken back to Kenya Commercial Bank’s Ugunja branch.

He said that the gang of five went with the G4S car for about five kilometers before abandoning it at Kakoth stage.

Eyewitness at the scene Mr John Okong’o said that they were shocked to find a vehicle they believe do not stop anyway because of its job, abandoned along the road.

He said that there was no one at the time they came to the scene.

The police boss said that it is not yet known if the robbery was stage managed or not.

“Since we have launched investigation, we believe we shall know whether it was stage managed or it was just a planned robbery,” Ndung’u said.

He added that they not only abandoned the car but took another route with its driver and the police officer before they dumped them near Shianda in Mumias town.

The security driver came back while the police officer was shot on the cheek and is admitted at Amatia Muslim Mission Hospital in a critical condition.
