GUCHA, KENYA: Police in Gucha are looking for a man who strangled to death and buried his two months old baby after differing with his girlfriend in an incident that left residents in shock.

The man, a 22 year old carpenter at Egetuki trading centre, allegedly committed the murder and went missing after his girlfriend; a student at a local secondary school dumped the baby girl at his home.

The teenage mother fell pregnant after an affair with the man who happens to be a relative. Trouble began when he denied responsibility for the pregnancy even after the child’s birth.

On Friday, the girl carried the baby girl and dumped it at the man’s house and left for her Nyaburumbasi village home, a kilometer away.

When she returned the following day to check on her baby, the man was missing together with the baby. On making an enquiry on mobile phone, the man allegedly told her that he had ‘kept the baby well’ within the compound.

She raised alarm and police together with members of the public mounted a search that led to the discovery of a shallow grave behind the man’s hut where the baby’s body was exhumed.

Gucha OCPD Richard Ng’etich confirmed the incident saying the body had been moved to Nyamache Level Four Hospital mortuary pending investigations and the arrest of the suspect.

“We are treating this as murder because the baby appears to have been strangled before being buried. The man fled after the incident and is still at large. The mother has recorded statements with us,” said Ng’etich.
