Shock and grief engulfed Kambaa village in Githunguri, Kiambu County after a five-year-old girl was defiled and murdered.

The child’s body was found yesterday morning in a farm, an incident that sparked protests among the locals. The deceased was a pre-unit pupil.

Mr John Karanja, a neighbour, said the minor disappeared on Saturday evening and it is believed a relative could be behind the incident.

“Her aunt took her from her home at around 6.30pm but she never returned,” said Karanja.

He added that they began looking for her on Sunday morning until yesterday when the child’s grandmother asked locals to look for her around the place where the body was found.

On Sunday, police unsuccessfully tried to calm the angry residents who accused the child’s grandmother and aunt of being behind the inhuman act.

Githunguri OCPD Wilkister Vera said already, they have arrested the aunt.

The granny was also arrested but later released, and locals are questioning why the police set her free, saying she was also involved in the killing..

Ms Vera said the woman was arraigned before a Githunguri court on charges of stealing a child, but she did not take a plea.

Police asked to detain her for a longer time as they continue with investigation.

“The locals accused her and so we took her as a suspect, and this morning we asked the court to allow us hold her longer to facilitate investigation, as the child was yet to be found,” Vera said.

She also said they are still carrying on with investigation to help arrest all those involved adding that they would include more charges to the accused.
