Mystery as BVR kit goes missing

By Boniface Ongeri
Concerns are mounting over the mysterious disappearance of a BVR kit used to register voters in Gumbi Wells polling station in Wajir South Constituency.

The kit has been missing since the end of the voter registration exercise. The IEBC Coordinator Liban Mohammed said they are still investigating the disappearance of the kit.

“We are astounded by the turn of events and we are doing everything possible to recover the kits. There are more than 600 voters who registered at the polling station and some of the names were forwarded
to the head office”, Mohammed said.

Leaders in Wajir South said they are concerned over the fate of some of those who had registered.

“We are not sure whether the data of the voters captured at the polling station is safe with IEBC”, said Ahmed Werer, a resident.

In the meantime, a section of aspirants in Mandera county have faulted IEBC bid to give those who have registered twice to set their record straight.

IEBC Commissioner Mohammed Alawi announced that they will come with a special register for those who have registered twice to decide where they want to cast their vote.

However, Bashir Hajji Abdullahi an aspirant for Mandera North Constituency said those who have registered should face legal action.

“There are people who have registered in Mandera South and Mandera North Constituencies and we wonder where IEBC will get that extra time to give such people time to decide”, he said.

He said those who registered more than once did so deliberately and legal action should be instituted against them.
