Two Administration police officers were on Sunday evening shot dead by unknown assailants in Garissa town.

The two were shot at close range and died on the spot along Ngamia road in the town while on the way to NEP Girls Secondary School for guard duties.

Police recovered two G3 rifles the officers were carrying loaded with 40  bullets in a nearby thicket.

Police say the two officers who graduated recently and were posted to Garissa, were beckoned by people in a vehicle who pretended that they were seeking help but were shot.

Security personnel in the town have launched a manhunt for the attackers.

The attack came hours after a after an attack at a church in Nairobi that left a nine-year-old boy dead and several others injured.

The incidents come after Kenya Defence Forces and AMISOM troops captured the port of Kimayu which was an Al Shabaab stronghold.
