A middle-aged man was shot dead and a GSU officer injured after being attacked by bandits along the Nyahururu Maralal road in Laikipia County.

The man was following the bandits after they stole his eight sheep when they turned on him and shot him.

The gang of eight, armed with AK-47 rifles, had raided Maundu in Meri village where they terrorised villagers before escaping with the sheep.

According to area OCPD Francio Nyamatari, the man decided to pursue the gangsters to recover his animals.

“One of the bandits saw him and shot him in the chest. He was rescued by neighbours and taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead,” he said. He noted that police launched a manhunt for the raiders and later recovered the sheep in a nearby bush.

In the other incident, the GSU officer while in the company of his colleague had their vehicle sprayed with bullets by bandits along the same road. He sustained serious bullet wounds on the head and is recuperating at Nyahururu District Hospital.

No arrests have been made but police has launched manhunt them.

The incident comes barely a day after a man was shot dead and another injured by cattle rustlers at Karandi village in the same district.
