Kenya Sugar Board (KSB) will hold elections to fill miller’s representative slot in the board by end of this month.
Regional manager Moses Goga told The Standard they had concluded preparations for the elections to be held on August 27. The polls will be presided over by KSB chief executive Rosemary Mkok and chairman Kiptarus Kerior.
The polls follow resignation of former Mumias Sugar Company’s managing director Evans Kidero, who quit the job for politics.
Fresh elections
Kidero is eyeing Nairobi governor’s seat in the forthcoming elections.
“The polls will be held as per our constitution, which says upon resignation of any member, then fresh elections must be held,” he said.
Currently, Sony Sugar Company managing director Paul Odola serves as vice-chairman of the board.
Kidero was one of members elected to the board as a representative of millers.
The polls come at a time when there is growing shortage of cane supply across the sugar belt. The shortage has been blamed on new private millers. Private sugar companies have been established within out-growers estates of Sony, Muhoroni and Mumias, and are giving state-owned millers cutthroat competition.
Erratic cane supply
This is because some of the state-owned factories are using old machines, which have hampered their production over the years.
