Uasu warns members over sexual harassment of students

The Universities Academic Staff Union (Uasu) says it will not defend members found guilty of seeking sexual favours from students.

Speaking in Kisii, the union’s Secretary General Sammy Kubasu maintained that members are expected to uphold professional ethics and shun conduct that compromises their integrity.

But he said Uasu was yet to receive any formal complaint on cases of sexually harassed.

“University students are adults who can consent to enter into relationships without being enticed. But some students consent to these liaisons in the hope for better marks, but our members should resist advances,” said  Dr Kubasu.

The secretary General encouraged members to approach the union for help if faced with sexual harassment from students.

Kisii University College principal Prof John Akama said the institution faced financial challenges owing to outstanding fees arrears and asked parents to clear balances.

Recently, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) launched a new system to nab teachers engaging in sex with their pupils.

Under the Customer Relations Management System and Database incidents of sexual assault will be instantly reflected in the system at all TSC offices and the headquarters.
